According to multiple sources, left handed reliever Trever Miller is close to signing with the St. Louis Cardinals for 2009. Miller, 35, was used by the Tampa Bay Rays as a left handed specialist for most of 2008 in his second stint with the team. He struck out more than one batter per inning and featured one of the numerous arm angles (left arm across the body) that the Rays bullpen had to offer. Perhaps Miller’s lasting image with the Rays is the foul out he induced against Joe Mauer to send them to the playoffs for the first time, and his place in the center of the celebration that followed.
We can find somebody else for 2009 and beyond, but this marks the first 2008 Ray to sign with another team. This proves once and for all that we are really moving on to another season after the amazing one we recently completed. We should forever appreciate that pennant run and the contributions that Trever Miller brought to it.
I’ll be back with more roster updates as they occur, so until next time, go Rays.
